 Mobile-phone Imagers Fuel New Apps
That high-resolution camera in your smartphone can be used for much more than just taking  self pictures. Scandinavian researchers extracted the image sensor from a phone to make a mini microscope capable of analyzing samples placed directly on the sensor chip. The system accurately detected parasites in patient samples, demonstrating potential as a cheap point-of-care analyzer for infectious disease. Elsewhere, Arden Photonics and the UK's National Physical Laboratory re purposed a commercially-available mobile phone liquid lens to produce a compact, economical laser beam analyzer.
